What GEO, AEO and AIO actually mean.
Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is the practice of getting your business named and cited inside AI-generated answers — ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. It is not a replacement for SEO. It is a second layer, and it runs on different signals: entities, structured data, third-party citations and clearly answered questions.
| Term | Stands for | What it optimises for | Where you appear |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO | Search Engine Optimisation | Ranking a page inside a list of results. | Google and Bing blue links, Maps, image results |
| AEO | Answer Engine Optimisation | Being the single direct answer to a question. | Featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistants |
| GEO | Generative Engine Optimisation | Being cited inside an answer the AI writes itself. | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude |
| AIO | AI Optimisation | Umbrella term — in practice, usually Google specifically. | Google's AI Overviews block, above the blue links |
Most agencies sell all four as one word. They are not one word — they need different work, and they are measured differently.
One of these layers is getting smaller.
Traditional search is contracting while AI answers absorb the questions. Gartner forecast a 25% fall in traditional search volume by 2026, and that has now landed. If blue-link rankings are your only visibility strategy, you are optimising hard for the layer that is shrinking.

You rank on Google, but ChatGPT has never heard of you
Ask an AI assistant the question your best customer asks. If it names three competitors and not you, that is your AI visibility — measured. Ranking page one changes nothing here, because the model is not reading a results page.
Traffic fell but your rankings did not
The classic AI Overviews pattern. You still hold position three; the answer now sits above you and the click never happens. Your rank tracker reports a good month while your enquiries quietly dry up.
Your SEO report has no AI column
Impressions, clicks, average position — all Google, all layer one. If nobody on your account has opened ChatGPT to check whether you get mentioned, then nobody is managing the half of search that is growing.
Your site is unreadable to the models
No structured data, no entity clarity, no llms.txt, and sometimes a robots.txt quietly blocking the AI crawlers entirely. Models cannot cite what they cannot parse — and 71% of pages ChatGPT cites carry structured data.
The engines we check, and the tier each starts at.
We monitor six answer engines. Which ones your plan covers is written on the plan, not left vague — because "we optimise for AI" without a named engine list is not a deliverable. Every engine below is checked by hand against your question list, on a fixed schedule.

You do not need to be a big brand to get cited.
The most common objection is that AI only quotes large publishers. The data disagrees. 77% of sources cited by AI assistants have a domain authority under 50, and of 48,560 domains cited in one large study, more than 33,000 appeared fewer than ten times. AI visibility is won across a long tail of small, well-structured, specific sources.

Both layers. One retainer.
One monthly fee covers traditional search and AI search together, because splitting them across two suppliers is how the handover gets dropped. Layer one earns the clicks that still exist. Layer two earns the citations that increasingly replace them.
Layer 1 — Google
I·01The traffic layer
- Technical audit and fixes: crawl, indexation, Core Web Vitals, speed
- On-page optimisation of the pages that actually earn money
- Content built on real search demand, not word count targets
- Local signals: Google Business Profile, citations, review velocity
- Internal linking that builds genuine topical depth
- Monthly rank movement on keywords agreed in writing
Layer 2 — AI search
I·02The citation layer
- Answer-first restructuring — the core answer inside the first 40–60 words
- Entity and schema architecture: Organization, Service, FAQPage, DefinedTerm
- llms.txt authored and published at your site root
- AI crawler policy in robots.txt: GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended
- Citation tracking — which engines name you, for which prompts
- Share of voice against the competitors currently being named instead
How it works.
- 01
Free AI visibility audit
We run your top buying questions through ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity, and send you the raw transcripts. You see exactly who gets named instead of you. No charge, no obligation, yours to keep.
- 02
Fix the foundations
Schema, answer-first structure, llms.txt, crawler policy, speed. Month one is mostly engineering rather than blogging — because a model cannot cite a page it cannot parse.
- 03
Earn the citations
Content built around the 23-word questions your buyers actually type, plus the third-party mentions and listings that models lean on when deciding who counts as credible.
- 04
Measure both layers
One monthly report. Google rank movement on one side, AI citation share on the other, in plain language. Stay if it is working. Leave if it is not. That is the whole deal.
The price on this page is the price you pay.
Most Indian agencies quote ₹25,000–₹2,50,000 a month for AI SEO and publish none of it. These three numbers are ours. Anything beyond the plan is agreed in writing before work starts — never billed after.

How "AI SEO" is usually sold — and what we do instead.
| What we are comparing | The usual agency | TNXN |
|---|---|---|
| G·01 The quote | "AI SEO" appears in the proposal as a line item with no number, no method and no deliverable. | Published rate: from ₹15,000/month. The same for everyone, agreed in writing before anything starts. |
| G·02 What "AI SEO" means | The 2019 checklist, with the word AI added to the deck title. | A separate measurable layer: entities, schema, llms.txt, crawler policy, citation tracking. |
| G·03 Engines measured | Google rankings only. Nobody has actually opened an AI assistant to look. | ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude — named per tier, not implied. |
| G·04 The report | Forty slides of impressions, reach and "brand awareness". | Two numbers you can verify yourself: rank movement, and which prompts name your business. |
| G·05 The promise | "Guaranteed #1 in ChatGPT" — a guarantee about output nobody controls. | We promise the work and the measurement. Never a position: AI citation is even less controllable than rank. |
| G·06 Lock-in | 12-month contracts, justified with "AI visibility takes time". | Month to month. If the citation share is not moving, you leave — that pressure keeps us honest. |
We run this page the way we would run yours.
Every tactic on this page is deployed on this page. You can verify all of it from your browser in about a minute — no case study, no screenshot, no trust required. If an agency sells AI visibility from a site with no schema and no llms.txt, you have learned something useful.

Questions about AI & GEO SEO
What is GEO (generative engine optimisation)?
GEO is the practice of getting your business cited inside AI-generated answers — ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. Where SEO competes for a position in a list of links, GEO competes to be one of the sources the model quotes while writing its answer. It relies on structured data, clear entity signals, third-party citations and questions answered directly and early on the page.
What is the difference between SEO, AEO, GEO and AIO?
SEO optimises for ranking a page in a list of results. AEO optimises for being the single direct answer — featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistants. GEO optimises for being cited inside an answer the AI writes itself. AIO is an umbrella term that, in practice, usually means Google's AI Overviews specifically. They overlap but they are not interchangeable: they need different work and they are measured differently.
How do I get my business cited by ChatGPT?
Four things, in order. Make the site machine-readable: structured data, clean HTML, and AI crawlers explicitly allowed in robots.txt. Answer real questions directly, with the core answer in the first 40–60 words. Build entity clarity so the model knows who you are and what you do. Then earn third-party mentions, because models weigh what other sites say about you. There is no submission form and no paid placement.
How much does AI SEO cost in India?
Most Indian agencies charge ₹25,000–₹2,50,000 a month, with starter programmes typically ₹25,000–₹50,000, and very few publish a rate at all. Ours starts at ₹15,000/month for the bundled Google-plus-AI-search retainer, rising to ₹30,000 and ₹60,000 as engine coverage and content volume increase. Those three numbers are the actual numbers — same for every client, month to month, no lock-in.
Does traditional SEO still work now that AI Overviews exist?
Yes, and it is still where most of the traffic is. But it is shrinking: Gartner forecast a 25% fall in traditional search volume by 2026, and AI Overviews now reach over two billion users a month. The pages that get cited by AI are usually pages that were already technically sound, so the two layers reinforce each other. Dropping SEO for GEO would be a mistake; running SEO alone is the more common one.
Can you guarantee I will appear in ChatGPT or AI Overviews?
No, and you should be sceptical of anyone who does. Nobody controls what a language model outputs, and citation sets shift between model versions — this is even less controllable than Google rankings, where we also refuse to promise positions. What we guarantee is the work, the measurement, and a monthly record of which prompts name you and which name a competitor.
What is llms.txt and do I need one?
llms.txt is a plain-text file at your site root that summarises what your organisation does and which pages matter, written for large language models rather than search crawlers. It is a proposed convention, not an official standard, and it is not a ranking factor. It is cheap, it makes your positioning unambiguous, and it costs nothing to be wrong about. Ours is live at tnxn.agency/llms.txt.
How do you track whether AI is citing my business?
We maintain a list of the buying questions that matter to you — 10 on Foundation, 30 on Growth, 75 on Authority — and run them against each engine your tier covers on a fixed schedule. The report records whether you were named, which URL was cited, and who was named instead. It is the same method you can run by hand; we just do it consistently and keep the history.
My business is small. Can I compete with big brands in AI answers?
Better than you can on Google, usually. 77% of sources cited by AI assistants have a domain authority under 50, and in one large study over 33,000 of 48,560 cited domains appeared fewer than ten times each. Models reward specific, well-structured answers to narrow questions — which favours a focused local business over a broad national brand on exactly the queries you care about.
How long before I see AI citations?
Honest answer: technical and schema fixes are often reflected within 2–6 weeks, because they change what the crawler can read. Genuine citation share on competitive commercial questions takes 3–6 months, and it moves in steps rather than a smooth curve as models refresh. Anyone quoting 30 days is selling you something. You see the audit and the work in month one either way.
Ask the AI about your business.
Send us your website and your three best buying questions. We will run them through ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity and send you the transcripts — free, yours to keep, whether or not you hire us.
